How To?

The Humanure Handbook: A Guide to Composting Human Manure, Third Edition - Joseph C. Jenkins

Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands (Vol. 1): Guiding Principles to Welcome Rain into Your Life And Landscape - Brad Lancaster

All New Square Foot Gardening - Mel Bartholomew - This book will show you how to grow enough food for one person in a space of 5' x 12" - for a year!
Where do we get the water if we have no power and no water systems? Check out the above book!

These are some of the books that the emergency management person recommended. I'm ordering off of Amazon tonight. The gardening and the rainwater thing I can start - not too sure about novel ways of recycling poop, although I've thought about that subject before. I've always wanted to read "The Toilet Water Papers" because it does seem to me its pretty crazy to poop into our waterways, then extract that water, put it full of chemicals, and then drink it. Figured there had to be a better way.

Oh yeh. Some folks are now looking at me askance and saying "She's off on another trip again!"

Are you going to get a rain barrel?

Or something - not sure how to go about this - we don't have raingutters to gather the rain - I would have to have troughs around the house - LOL - I just dunno - "H" is such a city-book-dude (not sure I'll get much help) - I think there are a variety of container types - but even a rain barrel would be something - interesting - they say to put packing peanuts in these raised beds to keep mold away - they allow for air circulation - ?

I grew up withrrain barrels. I think it's bizarre NOT to have one.

I am not so sure about the composting human waste...

Great looking books though, I think I'll look for them too. Nevermind naysayers...why should you be complacent...you are always challenging yourself and that is ENERGY!

Human manure??????

Good grief.

Trust me. If I eat a chicken vindaloo you do not want any composting from me. I can assure you your roses would die.

Violently ;-)

We have enough property to operate an outhouse if we need to. An outhouse is the most eco-friendly way to "compost" human waste.

I'm going to set up a removable(snow is hell on raingutters), gutter system on half of our shed this summer to collect rainwater. You'd be surprised how little gutter is required to collect more than enough water.

We live in a fairly rainy area, but there are always times when we need to water our garden and processed tapwater just doesn't do as well as rainwater.
