Cajun Hibiscus

Psycho stares longingly at the refrigerator. Too bad. I'm painting, no matter what. Everyone is on their own. It's ok, daughter eats at taco bell on the way to work, the boy is fed, "H" will heat up the usual sausage sandwich, and I'm fine with coffee and coke for the paint process. (I'm on a mega liquid vitamin supplement and 5 of the 7-8 pounds gained during the great meds mixup is off!) The cats do have food, just not what they want. Psycho wants the beef stroganoff that is behind these doors.

This painting is acrylic which I don't work with often. I don't like the fast drying time and it doesn't like being reworked, while oils thrive on more and more layers. But I'm thinking maybe the drying times will make me a little more spontaneous.

Started with a cool background but I think now it should have been something hot, or maybe ochre. I struggled with a feeling of "poinsettia Christmas card" with this one - although the finishing touches seemed to bring it back into the hibiscus look. I think I might try a couple more tropicals to loosen me up and get me back in the groove. I have determined to paint everyday. However, my art website - the .com one is a mess and needs attention. And the house and the yard. Oh well - its raining again - good excuse.

That painting looks pretty enough to put up on one of my walls. I love the look it has. Very beautifully done.

Okay, like I know anything. . . but when you said Cajun, I was expecting firey HOT!!! I think you are right. Not warm, but HOT colors. Yellow/yellow-orange/gold background and the flower orangy-red like it is burnign hot.

I feel really mean. Like I have any right to critique anything. So, please, dog my "work" too, because I really do want honest. Friends?

PS I love the cat looking at the fridge. THAT is a painting itself! And I just went out to your other website and LOVE the painting of the girl lounging about. You are so talented.

hatti - the real Cajun Hibiscus is sort of a faded red - more faded than the painting - but you are right about the background - I decided to glaze it over with some ochre - we'll see what happens! No, not mean - it helps to get input when things are working - Chuck was saying too green - need blue, and I said, no blue isn't it.....so let's try those hotter colors...

I'm glad that you are painting every day. Let the family take care of themselves for a bit. They did it while you were gone, they can manage while you paint for a few hours. Your time.
Love the painting, too. I am still so in awe of your talent :)

They don't look like poinsettias to me. Mind you, I don't think I've ever seen a real hibiscus, either. It's great to paint every day and make it part of your routine; I'm trying to do that with writing.

When I work with acrylics, I have trouble with the plasticity of the skin...textures lose their edge, and I don't like the way this feels. I deal with it by adding lots of water to my paint, allowing it to drip at will. I also use a water spray bottle as a painting tool.

See, what do I know about flowers?!!

Wow, wonderful to see these pieces ...looks like you're working up a storm. I bet that feels great Gardenia and chases away the cobwebs.

Sometimes you just have to dive and make stuff...not even with a plan or inspiration...that will follow. What a set of photos and your cat is lovely. He sure is staring at the food...

Mr. Anchovy - I use the water bottle to keep the paint wet - but you inspired me - I think I will do another in a looser manner and see what applying a spray will do - the happening should be half the joy.
